Sophie’s Style

Soph has such style to her modeling, and she likes to be anonymous in the photographs. So when I booked my room at the Elandra in Mission Beach and they had props already in the room I was delighted and had a few ideas that would fit to her style of figure work. It’s a challenge to make anonymous nudes. A too obvious pose lets the viewer in on the secret, and I never like to give away my secrets and I wanted to bring out something more that also worked with her style. So this all worked out brilliantly in this space. At least I think so.

Soph: Jungle Dance

This was a day of firsts.  First time working with the lovely Soph from Australia, first time entering the jungle forests of Australia and the first time I encountered the biting things of Australia.  The first two firsts more than made up for the last one.  We shot in two locations, first in some forest near Mission Beach and then among the rocks and trees on Mission Beach.  We entered the forest on a trail and did some shooting among some trees using the shadows of the leaves to paint her body.  Then we continued down the trail coming to a creek where we also ran into some other members of our group. Soph wandered up the creek where we got some stunning shots with the jungle canopy surrounding her.  And this is where the jungle dance comes in.  It was my first experience with the biting flies of Mission Beach.  And it’s not one or two attacking you..but swarms of them about the size of a US horse fly biting you and drawing blood.  But what am I complaining about! I had shorts on and they were just biting my legs. Poor naked Soph was getting bitten all over. It’s amazing either of us could hold still enough under the dark canopy of the jungle to get any sharp images!  We then escaped the killer flies to go to the flyless beach.  When we arrived at the beach, we ran into the same members of our group we encountered in the forest.  I swear we were not stalking them!!!  Once on the beach, we got some beautiful images among the boulders and trees.  Thanks to Soph for sharing the experience, the bites  and getting some lovely images

October 5

Today was spent being extremely mellow after all the traveling we had to do to get here. The room I have lends itself well to shooting and relaxing so I did a bit of both.

I see heaven out my window. Friends at the pool, tropical flowers on the walkways, and butterflies and Wallabys around every corner.

Soph and I had a shoot about 2 hours ago and I can’t wait to develop my film when I return home. In the mean time you will all just have to get an idea from my iPhone snaps. 🙂

Now if you’ll excuse me… I have a date with the swimming pool! Rei and Muse are already there.

First days, first impressions.

After arriving in Cairns on Saturday morning, I did a bit of sighting seeing around town until I met Soph and James at the airport to give them a lift down to Mission Beach. Along the way we stopped at Babinda Boulders as I thought it might be a great location to do shoot. We weren’t disappointed and my first shoot was underway technically even before OzFest was to begin.

I’ve shot with Soph on two previous occasions and both times were fantastic and we achieved some really memorable images. This time was just as great and was a perfect way to kick off my week of shooting art nudes in tropical North Queensland.

Sunday was a fairly relaxing day spent checking out the local markets and looking for some shoot locations before the majority of the group arrived.

We had our meet and great BBQ Sunday evening and it was great to finally meet everyone who I had only met in cyberspace before. Considering this is my first Zoe Fest event, everyone has been super friendly to me and I can see why everyone loves to attend every year.

I get the feeling this will be a fantastic week and I’m sure this will not be my last Zoe Fest.
